Firefighters have managed to reduce the area of forest fires by about 20 percent in Russia's Far Eastern region of Yakutia over the past week, local forest authorities said Thursday.

Thirty-four fires burned 86,500 hectares of Yakutia forests last week. Firefighters had put out nine spots of fire over an area of more than 15,000 hectares, sources said.

Planes and helicopters dropped more than 750 tons of water on forest fires. More than 1,000 people joined the efforts to put out wildfires on the ground, and 106 smoke jumpers, wildland firefighter who parachute into the area are leading the efforts.

To prevent the reoccurrence of wildfires, people are prohibited from entering the forests. A state of emergency was declared last week in eight districts of Yakutia and in the city of Yakutsk.
