The top priority of the new ruling party leadership was to continue the modernization process of Romania, said Prime Minister Emil Boc on Monday.

Only when the new leadership takes its responsibility to push forward the modernization drive, can Romanian people feel the authorities are governing the country and will bring about the much-hoped prosperity, said Boc, who was reelected leader of the ruling Democratic Liberal Party on Saturday.

"We are aware that emerging from the (economic) recession is just the first step toward emerging from the crisis," he said.

Boc's government survived five no-confidence votes filed by the opposition in the past 15 months. < Boc said the most difficult task would be winning the 2012 parliamentary elections.

"We are in a serious competition against the Socialist Alliance, but I am more hopeful than ever before that thanks to the new team the National Convention has offered me, we can keep the Socialist Alliance in the opposition," he said.

"We have emerged stronger from the internal elections, we were, are and will be a winning party," Boc said.

On Saturday, the Democratic Liberal Party started the two-day National Convention to elect its new leadership, believed an important step in the party's preparation for local and general elections in 2012.

Boc defeated the party's Secretary-General Vasile Blaga and Theodor Paleologu, a member of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies, in the vote late Saturday, securing the party's support for his government.
