The top European Union envoy for Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Valentin Inzko, on Wednesday reiterated his opposition to a proposed referendum in Republika Srpska, the Serb dominated Bosnian entity, reported the Banja Luka daily "Independent."

Inzko made the comment after meeting with Milorad Dodik, president of Republika Srpska, on Wednesday in the Bosnian Serb capital of Banja Luka.

The High Representative said that he had found no common ground with Dodik in their discussion of the referendum plan, which was adopted by the National Assembly of Republika Srpska on April 13.

The referendum would challenge the legality of the judiciary and prosecutor's office and, by extension, the legitimacy of decisions imposed by previous High Representatives in BiH.

"We could not agree with respect to the referendum," said Inzko after the meeting. "You all know the position of the international community, and Dodik does not agree with it."

Inzko had previously threatened to nullify the adopted law, if Bosnian Serb authorities do not refrain from conducting a referendum.

Before the meeting, Dodik stated that the decision to hold a referendum was "legal and legitimate."

"From our perspective, there is no question about whether to hold a referendum. We cannot overturn the decision," said Dodik, adding that his government had a number of options available in response to any possible sanctions imposed by the High Representative.
