Some 20,000 union members marched through the streets of the Spanish capital Madrid to celebrate May 1 on Sunday.

The leaders of the country's two main unions -- Union General de Trabajadores (UGT) and Comisiones Obreras (CC.OO), Candido Mendez and Ignacio Toxo used the event to criticize the government over the recent unemployment figures, which show that 4,900,000 people are out of work in Spain.

"These are 4.9 million reasons to look for alternative economic, fiscal and social solutions, which are different from those currently being carried out by the government," said Toxo.

Meanwhile Mendez highlighted that the collective bargaining agreement, which the unions are currently negotiating with the government and employers organizations, was not the definitive solution to the country's problems.

"It will give important results to the Spanish economy and to companies and the workers, but it is not going to resolve problems to do with economic growth," he said.
