A total of 86 women were elected as members of the parliament in last Sunday's parliamentary election in Finland, or 43 percent of total 200 MPs, setting a new record of proportion of women MPs in the successive Finnish parliaments, Finnish media reported on Tuesday.

Finnish women won the right to vote and be elected in 1906. In 1907, 19 women became the first women MPs in Finland, which is the first country in the world to have women MPs.

Finland has had the highest proportion of women MPs in the world for years. In 2003, 75 women were elected MPs, accounting for 37.5 percent of total number of MPs. In 2007, women MPs increased to 84, accounting for 42 percent of the MPs.

In addition to the increase of women MPs, the average age of MPs in the new Finnish parliament is younger than the previous parliaments. The average age of MPs is 47.8 years old, which is slightly lower than average age of 47.9 in the last parliament. Among the newly elected MPs, the numbers of those in their twenties and forties have increased. Nine MPs are under the age of 30. The youngest is only 25 years old.
