A fire broke out in a building in Paris on Wednesday night and killed five people, four of whom threw themselves from windows to escape, local media reported Thursday.

Citing police sources, the local television channel BFM TV said the fire which broke out at around 02:30 a.m. injured 50 people living in a private building in the city. Six habitants were in serious situation.

The high toll of causalities was due to the difficult access to the city and the overcrowding in flats, according to the report.
