The death toll from a blast at an ammunition depot in central Russia has risen to four, according to a Defense Ministry spokesman Wednesday.

Col. Igor Konashenko also said another person was wounded in the blast.

According to preliminary investigations, the explosion was caused by a spontaneous ignition of a 40-kg gunpowder container.

Citing a source, Interfax news agency said an error occurred during the disposal of the gunpowder, leading to the ignition and detonation.

Earlier in the day, local reports said the blast occurred at 10:20 a.m. Moscow time (0620 GMT) at the ammunition depot in a missile and artillery base in Lipetsk region.

An investigation is underway.
