Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Saturday chaired a meeting about the development of Russia's nuclear power sector amidst the crisis at Japan's nuclear plants.

The prime minister was scheduled to visit Sakhalin Island (Kuye island), a region located closest to Japan, to deal with issues related to completion of the construction of a local combined heat and power plant.

Japan, after a devastating earthquake last week triggered a crisis at its nuclear power plant, appealed to Russia to increase the supply of hydrocarbons. Russia's Gazprom has already agreed on additional deliveries of up to 100,000 tons of liquefied gas to Japan in April and May.
