Austria supports Bulgaria's efforts toward accession to the Schengen Area, said Austrian Federal President Heinz Fischer on Monday.

Fischer made the remarks during his talks with visiting Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov.

The accession of Bulgaria to the border inspection-free Schengen Area is currently blocked by Germany and France, which argued that Bulgaria had made little progress in combating corruption and organized crime. The country's accession to Schengen was originally planned for March 2011.

Fischer stressed that Bulgaria's participation in Schengen should not be linked with "additional items."

Parvanov expressed his appreciation of Austria's support, and said that the technical requirements for the Schengen accession would be fulfilled by mid-March 2011.
