Italian PM Berlusconi undergoes face surgery

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi had a face surgery on Monday, according to a statement published by Italian Coucil of Ministers.

During the operation which lasted for 4 hours, the prime minister underwent a surgery of maxilla-facial bone grafting and tooth implantation, under the condition of general anesthesia.

It is necessary (for the prime minister) to restore the masticatory function which is severely compromised by the attack happened on Dec. 13, 2009, said the statement.

The prime minister was attacked, injured in the face by a man with mental problems at a political rally in Milan in that evening. He was bundled into a car and rushed to hospital immediately after the attack.

His personal doctor said the premier had suffered a fractured nose, two broken teeth and cuts to his lips due to the attack.
