More than 700 Romanian citizens and 100 foreign citizens were evacuated from Libya in the last ten days by Romania, Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi said Thursday at a press conference.

According to him, since February 21, the ministry has mobilized a round-the-clock crisis cell in the Ministry, and another in the Romanian Embassy in Tripoli, focusing on the operation for the safe evacuation of 735 Romanian citizens from Libya.

"Besides the compatriots successfully evacuated from Libya, we managed to prove our solidarity with other EU member states and with other people," said Baconschi, adding that the two Romanian military aircraft shuttling between Tripoli and Bucharest have evacuated 72 member states' citizens, plus seven U.S. citizens, three Canadians, eight Ukrainians, one Russian, as well as the Ambassador of Sierra Leone in Tripoli, together with his family, three Serbians and one Libyan, a child with parents of Libyan citizenship.

According to Baconschi, the Foreign Ministry plans to modify the legislation so that the Romanian citizens living in countries with political instability potential or with security risk potential should announce their presence in due time at the embassies of Romania, as the work of the staff involved in the operation in Libya was made extremely more difficult because there was not any evidence of the citizens living in this country.

Previous official data showed that there were some 450 Romanian nationals in Libya at the moment when the unrest broke out. But the number turned out to be much larger.

The Romanian government decided on February 23 to send planes to evacuate its nationals in Libya and one day later the first two aircraft left Bucharest for Tripoli.
