Three militants have been killed during a counter-terrorism operation in Russia's North Caucasian republic of Chechnya, local reports said on Friday.

"During a special operation, police forces found the trace of an armed group in mountains in the Achkhoy-Martan district on Friday morning. The forces surrounded the group and asked militants to surrender," Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov was quoted by local media as saying.

"In response, the militants opened the fire," Kadyrov said, adding that three militants were killed during the clash.

According to Kadyrov, those killed militants have been already identified.

Violence is common in the North Caucasus republics of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia with militants frequently attacked police officers and authorities.
