The Defense Ministry on Thursday sent two military transport planes to Libya to evacuate Romanian citizens trapped in troubled Libya.

The two aircraft were headed for Malta's capital city La Valetta, and then were to go on to Tripoli if weather conditions allow landings on the city's airport.

Otherwise, the planes will wait in Malta until they can fly to Tripoli.

"The situation is really worrying and we hope those Libyan authorities and institutions still operational, particularly the military ones, would be able to help us so that Romania may join other states and evacuate as many Romanians from Libya as possible," said Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi.

The Romanian government decided Wednesday to send planes to evacuate the country's 450 nationals in Libya.
