Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said Tuesday the country has upgraded its relations with Turkey to a strategic partnership.

"The visit of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Ukraine opens new prospects for cooperation between the two countries at the level of a strategic partnership," Yanukovych said at a meeting with Erdogan.

"I'm confident the right time has come for decisive steps to be taken," he added.

The Ukrainian president said political stability in Ukraine and Turkey had contributed to the active restructuring of strategic relations between the two countries.

He also signed a joint declaration with Erdogan on the establishment of a high-level strategic council between Ukraine and Turkey, which Erdogan said would give impetus to the further development and strengthening of ties between the two countries.

The two sides also signed agreements on transportation and energy, expecting trade volume between the two countries to reach 10 billion U.S. dollars in the next five years.

"Ukraine and Turkey will carry out a joint energy policy in third countries," Yanukovych said, adding the two sides have acknowledged the need to create transnational transport corridors to connect eastern and northern Europe with the Middle East and Central Asia.

Erdogan said Turkish construction companies are interested in participating in the construction of Ukraine's facilities for the 2012 UEFA Football Championship.

The two sides also agreed to start working on canceling visa requirements between the two countries.
