Turkish police seize large amounts of heroin, hashish

Police seized more than 100 kg of heroin and about 120 kg of hashish in an anti-drug operations in eastern and southeastern regions on Friday, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.

Police stopped a truck on a highway in the southeastern Hakkari Province and found 101.5 kg of crystal heroin in the vehicle, the report said.

Driver of the truck and another suspect were detained in the operation, it said.

In the eastern Elazig Province, police confiscated 105.7 kg of hashish in a car and detained two people, the agency reported.

Police also impounded 12 kg of hashish and detained 16 people in a series of operations in the eastern Erzurum Province on Friday, according to the report.

Turkey is a key transit route for smuggling drugs from Asia and the Middle East to markets in western Europe.
