France welcomed Estonia's acceptance into the eurozone on Friday, one day before the beginning of the country's official entry into the alliance.

Estonia's membership enlarged the eurozone to a 17-members group.

"This membership is a mark of confidence in the unique European currency," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Christine Fages said at a regular news briefing. "It allows Estonia to take its place in deciding European decisions, in particular on economic and financial governance."

The European Commission gave Estonia the green light to use the shared euro currency in May.
