The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday Russia has to declare a British diplomat persona non grata because Britain has "groundlessly" declared the same to a Russian diplomat.

"Britain has groundlessly declared person non grata to a Russsian diplomat in London, so we have to undertake an adequate action to respond," the ministry said in a statement posed on its website.

The ministry also said it regretted that London has taken an unfriendly step amid improvement of Russian-British relations.

"It is regrettable that the actions of the British side have been undertaken in a moment when signs of improvement in our relations with Britain have appeared," the statement said.

"The responsibility for the consequences of this incident lays entirely on those who masterminded it," it added.

Britain expelled on Tuesday a diplomat from Russia's embassy in London.
