European Council President Herman von Rompuy said on Tuesday that the stability of the eurozone is a key challenge for the EU.

Speaking at a conference titled "Challenges facing the European Union" in Budapest, Von Rompuy said member countries were willing to do anything necessary to protect the eurozone.

"Each EU member must keep to the strictest financial criteria as well as finding a solution to the debt problem," Von Rompuy said.

Another key challenge for the EU is to increase the continent's competence in research and development. "Europe should aim to lead the world in research, development and innovation, but it needs to create the conditions in which young scientists can be educated and trained so that they can work on the continent," Von Rompuy said.

"At the same time Europe needs to remove the barriers to mobility of scientists around the EU," he added.

Von Rompuy also welcomed Hungary's stated intention to focus on the increased integration of the western Balkan region during its six-month presidency of the EU, which begins in January.
