Ukraine and the United States have reached a new level of bilateral relations, the Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S. said Thursday.

"The trade turnover between the two countries, which declined significantly as a result of the global financial crisis, increased by 68.5 percent in 2010 compared to the previous year," Ambassador Aleksandr Motsyk said at a meeting at the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

However, Motsyk stressed the need to fully use the potential of bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

The ambassador noted that more than 1,500 U.S. companies were currently operating in Ukraine, with a total investment volume of 1.218 billion dollars.

Motsyk said investments in Ukraine are growing, especially in the energy and nuclear sectors.

"There is clear agreement that the process of Ukraine's giving up its stocks of highly enriched uranium should be conducted simultaneously with the construction of respective infrastructure for research in the nuclear field with low-enriched uranium," the ambassador said.
