Nokia Siemens Networks on Wednesday won approval from the European Union (EU) to buy the U.S. -based Motorola Network Business.

After examining the operation, the European Commission, the EU' s antitrust watchdog, said in a statement that the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in Europe.

Nokia Siemens Networks, a joint venture of Nokia and Siemens in the Netherlands, provides mobile and fixed network infrastructure, communications and networks service platforms, as well as professional services to operators and service providers.

Motorola Network Business designs, manufactures, sells and installs mobile network systems for mobile service providers.

The deal was meant to strengthen the presence of Nokia Siemens Networks in Japanese and North American markets.
