Authorities on Friday arrested a Serbian officer with the Kosovo police department in connection with the death of of a civilian in the divided town of Kosovska Mitrovica.

Hakif Mehmeti, a 31-year-old Kosovo Albanian, was killed Tuesday in the billiard bar owned by Ljubisa Vujinovic, now the main suspect in the case.

Kosovo police spokesperson Besim Hoti said Vujinovic also served as a member of the Serbian Interim ministry, known as MUP.

"Police found out that the suspect possessed a Serbian MUP ID card, which proves his double service," Hoti said.

Police says Mehmeti spent the evening in Vujinovic's bar and the police officer took the victim to a local hospital.

Hoti said an investigation of Mehmeti' s killing revealed Vujinovic's service for the Serbian MUP, which is regarded as "an illegal activity" for Kosovo Police.

Serbian police officers in northern Kosovo serve in a unique structure of the Kosovo Police, but without an effective respect of the chain of command from Pristina.

Northern Kosovo is a Serb-dominated area that opposes Kosovo's independence declared in February 2008, and is known for being an area disintegrated from the major part of the territory.
