Several attacks in Russia's restive North Caucasus republics of Dagestan and Ingushetia have killed two people and injured three others overnight, local media reported.

Head of a district in Dagestan survived a late Thursday assassination when a car bomb exploded as he was traveling by, the Interfax news agency said on Friday. His three bodyguards were injured and taken to hospital.

In another attack in the republic, two locals were killed as a group of unknown assailants stopped their car and opened fire at them. The motive for the attack was not clear.

Also on Friday, a suspected militant was detained in the neighboring republic of Ingushetia. He was believed to have authored a car bombing in June 2009, killing a police officer.

Violence is common in Ingushetia, Dagestan and Chechnya as militants frequently target locals and police officers who, they believe, represent Russia's authorities.
