Party leaders urge Medvedev to save Moscow forest

The ruling United Russia party members urged Russia' s President Dmitry Medvedev to look thoroughly into the construction of a new Moscow-St. Petersburg highway across the Khimki Forest, reported Russian media on Thursday.

"We have asked President Dmitry Medvedev today to look into the situation surrounding the work of building a Moscow-St. Petersburg highway across the Khimki Forest," the Interfax news agency quoted chairman of the party' s Supreme Council Boris Gryzlov as saying.

The move follows some pretests concerning the Khimki Forest last month. Ecologists are deeply concerned with the forest, claiming that the highway will not solve the transport problem and will destroy the natural resources of the territories.

The construction of the highway is expected to start in October.
