Afghanistan intends to buy modern weapons from Russia, the country's charge d'affaires in Russia Hafizullah Ebadi told Interfax news agency Tuesday.
"Afghanistan definitely needs powerful national armed forces for the purpose of protecting its national sovereignty and territorial integrity," he was quoted by the agency as saying.
He added the country has a right to turn to any country to meet its needs.
So far the diplomat said no agreements were expected to be signed at the upcoming meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in Russia's southern city of Sochi.
The leaders of Russia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan will hold talks Wednesday.
