France will construct two Mistral-class helicopter carriers for Russia, a senior Russian Navy official said Friday.

"Russia will buy or build four Mistral-class ships. Delegations in Paris are discussing the 2+2 scheme," the admiral said.

Initially, Moscow planned to purchase one French Mistral carrier and built three more in partnership with the country's naval shipbuilder DCNS. But following bilateral talks were more focused on the 2+2 scheme.

The official expressed hope that Russian experts will learn how the vessels are built in France, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Many experts claimed the purchase was a chance for Russia to get access to advanced technologies in naval building.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on June 9 the deal was far from being signed because there were many disputed questions.

The Mistral-class warship is capable of deploying 16 helicopters, four landing barges, up to 70 armored vehicles with 13 battle tanks, and some 450 personnel.
