Three Palestinian journalists were injured Saturday during clashes between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli forces near Hebron in southern West Bank, witnesses said.

The Israeli forces attacked the protestors with rubber bullets and tear gas and beat them with rods batons, the witnesses said. Among those who were beaten are three photographers, according to the witnesses who confirmed that the soldiers also arrested one of the journalists. The demonstration was held in Beit Omar town to the north of Hebron against the construction of the West Bank cement barrier. The wall has been being built since 2002 and aims to isolate Jewish settlements from neighboring Palestinian communities.

The international community agrees that the settlements are illegal since they were built on occupied lands.

The settlement has been a thorny issue in peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians. In 2008, the negotiations stopped and the settlement activities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want as a future capital, have been the reason for the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) to refuse the resumption of the direct, full negotiations.

In recent months, the Palestinian government stepped popular and peaceful resistance against settlements, including weekly demonstrations and a campaign to boycott commercial produce of the settlements.
