Bulgaria on Friday ratified the stabilization and association agreement between the European Union and Serbia, the first step toward Serbia's EU membership.

The agreement was signed in April 2008, while the internal ratification procedures among the EU member states were launched in June 2010.

"The EU accession of a democratic and reformed Serbia is of interest to Bulgaria and to the stability and to development of the Western Balkans and the EU as a whole," Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov told the country's parliament.

"In order to prevent the risk of disappointment, impatience, fatigue, pessimism and distrust, we must give a clear signal that all Bulgaria's neighbors in the Western Balkans will join the EU when they fulfill the conditions for membership," Mladenov added.

Although Bulgaria and Serbia are Slavic countries, they had many contradictions and conflicts in recent and more distant past. However, during the last several years Bulgaria has supported the efforts of all its neighbors, including Serbia, to join the EU.
