Russia's air force will soon be equipped with the latest S-500 and S-400 ground-to-air missile systems,Commander-in-Chief Alexander Zelin said Tuesday.

"We will acquire a very significant quantity of these systems before 2020," Zelin said. "The S-500 air defense system is a system that will fix Russia's missile defense problems."

The S-500 is expected to have an extended range and a 10-piece warhead that would make the system capable of destroying hypersonic ballistic targets.

The next generation S-500 is due to be developed by 2015, said Igor Ashurbeily, director of S-400 producer Almaz Central Design Bureau.

Two S-400 long-range missile defense systems would be deployed in the Far East by the end of 2010, Zelin said, adding that the air force will also acquire 60 fifth-generation fighters between 2015 and 2016.

The most of the existing equipment in Russia's armed forces has been outdated since 2009.
