Russian President Dmitry Medvedev sent a message to Bronislaw Komorowski to congratulate him on being elected as president of Poland, the Kremlin press service said on Tuesday.
The Russian president said the building of Russian-Polish ties in political, economic, humanitarian and other areas is among Russia's foreign political priorities.
"We expect that mutual support we gave each other in a difficult period, when we were through together by tragic events, will become an important foundation that would help us form a course toward consistent development of partnership in the spirit of true neighborliness. I am sure that such an approach is in long- term interests of our countries and peoples," Medvedev said in the message.
The Russian president said he is willing to continue working together with Komorowski and to maintain a regular dialogue between Russia and Poland, with the aim of expanding comprehensive cooperation between the two countries and strengthening stability and security in Europe.
"I wish you, Mr. President, health and success on your high- ranking position, and the entire Polish people prosperity and well- being," the message said.
Komorowski took over presidential duties after the death of President Lech Kaczynski in an air crash on April 10 near Smolensk, Russia.
The presidential elections were originally slated in October. Komorowski decided to call for an early election in accordance with election law.
