President Dmitry Medvedev congratulated his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko and all Belarusians on their country's Independence Day on Saturday, the Kremlin said.

"It is deeply symbolic that on this day we mark together the anniversary of the liberation of Belarusian territory from the Nazis," Medvedev was quoted by RIA Novosti news agency as saying.

He added that it was vital for Russia and Belarus to strengthen democracy and cooperation on technological modernization and social-economic development.

Belarus celebrates the main state holiday Independence Day on July 3 to mark the 1944 liberation of Minsk from German troops.

On the occasion, celebrations are held in all cities. A march of veterans of the Great Patriotic War, as well as columns of educational establishments, enterprises and organizations pass along Independence Avenue to Victory Monument.

The march is traditionally headed by Lukashenko and his sons.
