Spain's Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said on Friday that his country's presidency of the European Union (EU) has been a total success.

Spain's six-month presidency of the EU expires at the end of June. While the European financial markets have experienced a traumatic period with several EU countries forced into drastic measures to combat the economic crisis, Moratinos believes Spain's leadership has been successful.

"There are still a few days left to close the work of the Presidency, but we can draw a positive balance if we look at the measures that we proposed and what has been achieved," he said in a digital interview with the El Pais newspaper.

"I think Spain has achieved 100 percent of its objectives in the application of the Treaty of Lisbon, as well as in the way out of the economic and financial crisis with the conclusions that have been brought out of the European Council, which have strengthened the unity and economic government of Europe," said the minister.

"Regarding European citizenship, we have passed a series of measures in relation to the Citizens Legislative Initiative, equality between men and women and everything in relation to justice and maybe we should underline the summit meeting between the EU and Latin America and other actions in the Balkans, the Middle East, the extension of the EU and new neighbors, etc," Moratinos added.

The top diplomat also noted that under Spain's leadership over the last six months, the EU has taken steps to improve relations with Eastern Europe.

"During the Presidency we have launched a new concept of modernization, which is going to anchor relations between Russia and the EU for the next decade. Spain has worked on this from the start, but we have to do more in terms of liberalizing visas to bring European and Russian society closer," said Moratinos.
