Russian political leaders may soon change their Mercedes sedans and jeeps for the Russian-made cars, a high-ranking Kremlin official was quoted as saying on Monday by the Echo Moskvy radio station.

According to the current "table of ranks," the president and the prime minister may use the foreign-made means of transportation, Kremlin's chief property manager Vladimir Kozhin said during the radio interview.

"The cars made by Mercedes and BMW companies are being purchased by the Federal protection service," he said. "Now the president ordered to study a possibility to use the cars made by Russian ZIL factory."

He refused to specify what plant would assemble the new cars.

In the Soviet times, the party and state's highest officials used to travel by the Soviet-made black sedans "Chaika" ("Seagull") , produced by GAZ car plant in Nizhny Novgorod (then Gorky).

This is not the first attempt of the Russian authorities to reseat the country's official from foreign-made cars to those of Russian making. All the previous attempts failed due to the poor quality of the local cars in comparison to the Western vehicles.
