Two killed in blast in Russian hydropower plant

Two people were killed after a blast occurred in a hydropower plant in central Russia Wednesday, emergency department officials said.

Among the two victims was one firefighter, who fell from high. The other died in the blast.

Ten others were also wounded at the Nizhnekamskaya hydropower plant in central Russian republic of Tatarstan.

The blast happened in the air compression pump in the main generator hall at around 04:30 p.m. Moscow time (1230 GMT), news agencies reported. Heavy smokes ensued the explosion.

The incident did not affect the normal operation of the powerplant, local media reported.

The manager of the powerplant which was built in the late 1970s said the exact reasons behind the blast was currently unclear.

A criminal case has been launched by the regional Investigation Committee on negligence and violations of safety rules.

Last August, a devastating disaster at Russia's largest hydroelectric plant killed 75 people.
