Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin ordered late Monday a comprehensive probe into the Raspadskaya mine disaster and measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

"I am ordering an in-depth probe into this disaster and the actions taken by specific officials. We need to study it thoroughly," Putin said at a meeting addressing the aftermath of the mine blast, quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency.

He said that he wanted inspections of not only safety and rescue equipment, but also into the actions of the coal company that runs the mine.

"We need to know the reasons that led to such a large death toll," he said.

Putin pointed out the need for "decisions to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future."

"Appropriate conclusions are to be made on the basis of it. I reiterate: not only as regards the Raspadskaya mine, but also as regards the entire coal extraction industry and all enterprises with a potentially dangerous production cycle," Putin added.
