Eurozone retail trade remains stable in March

The volume of retail trade in the Eurozone remained unchanged in March, while retail trade fell by 0. 2 percent in February,the European Union (EU)'s statistical bureau Eurostat said on Wednesday.

In March, food, drinks and tobacco decreased 0.2 percent on monthly basis in the 16 nations that use the euro, and non-food sector decreased by 0.1 percent.

Year on year,the Eurozone retail sales declined by 0.1 percent in March, however, food, drinks and tobacco gained 0.9 percent,while non-food sector remained stable.

In the 27-nation EU, the volume of retail trade in March was the same as previous month and grew by 0.3 percent against a year ago.

Among the EU member states for which data were available, total retail trade grew in fifteen and declined in three. Portugal reported the largest decrease with 2.8 percent, followed by Germany with 2.4 percent. The highest increases were observed in Denmark, up by 5.5 percent.

Retail sales are an indication of household demand, one of the three major economic drivers.
