Profile: European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso

Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, the executive body of the European Union, will pay an official visit to China from Thursday to Saturday at the invitation of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.

Barroso, born in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon in March 1956, graduated in law from Lisbon University and later obtained a master's degree in politics from Geneva University in 1978.

Barroso was elected into the Portuguese parliament in 1985 and became a state secretary in the foreign affairs ministry in 1987. From 1992 to 1995, he served as foreign affairs minister. In April 2002, he became prime minister of Portugal.

In November 2004, Barroso was chosen to be the new European Commission president. In September 2009, he was re-elected by the European Parliament for another five years.

As European Commission president, Barroso attended the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th annual sessions of the China-EU Summit. He also paid two official visits to China in 2005 and 2008.
