Denmark celebrates 70th birthday of Queen Margrethe II

Denmark on Friday celebrated the 70th birthday of Queen Margrethe II which falls on April 16.

At noon, the Queen, her husband Prince Henrik and other members of the royal family, appeared on the balcony of the Amalienborg palace to receive public blessing.

Danes gathered in the square in front of the palace, waving Danish flags and singing Danish birthday song to show respect to the Queen.

Escorted by guards of honor, the Queen couple then took a carriage, heading for the Copenhagen city hall, where they attended a birthday lunch held by the municipal government.

There she also received blessings from foreign guests, including members of the Swedish royal family. In the evening, the Queen hosted a private banquet in Peace Palace for political leaders and royal family members.

Margrethe II ascended to the throne on Jan. 14, 1972, becoming the second female monarch in Danish history. Well educated and noted for her high attainment in literature and art, she has been held in high esteem among her people.

The birthday celebrations are running from March 24th through May. A variety of events and activities are being held in major cities to highlight the Queen's life and works, including concerts, banquets, parades, and exhibitions.
