British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is expected to announced on Tuesday morning that the general election will be held on May 6, local media reported on Tuesday.

Brown will leave Downing Street No. 10 on Tuesday for what was expected to go to Buckingham Palace to ask Queen Elizabeth II to dissolve parliament as a prelude to a May election.

The dissolution of Parliament will take place on April 12.

Under Britain's constitution, the monarch has to officially dissolve the current parliament at the request of the prime minister before a new election can be held.

When Brown returns to the Downing residence, he will formally confirm the date and make a speech.

Labour party's election campaign focuses on securing the economic recovery, protecting frontline public services, cutting the deficit in half and renewing British politics.

"The people of this country have fought too hard to get Britain on the road to recovery to allow anybody to take us back on the road to recession." said Brown last night, quoted by Britain's Sky News.
