The Calabrian Mafia, known as Ndrangheta, has expanded its operations to Portugal, the country's newspaper Expresso reported Sunday.

The Italy-based mafia has set up bases in Portugal's Faro, Algarve, Setubal and Cascais, Lisbon, and Oporto, Expresso reported.

Portuguese police have been checking bars and clubs in Vilamoura and Albueira -- typical targets for extortion by the mafia clans.

The Iberian Peninsula has become the new frontier for the crime syndicates who have been engaged in illegal activities like money laundering in the past years, Italian investigators said.
