The Europe 2020 economic plan unveiled by the European Commission on Wednesday is a good starting point for a discussion on EU development strategy in the next 10 years, a senior Polish official said on Thursday.
The document is focused on investments in research and innovations and promoting an environment-friendly economy based on knowledge. It is to replace the ineffective Lisbon Strategy.
"The document in the present shape is an EC stance which seeks to balance various interests of member states and constitutes a good starting point for a discussion, compared with the original document," minister at the Polish prime minister's chancellery Michal Boni was quoted as saying by the Polish news agency PAP.
"During the EU summit in Brussels on June 25 and 26, we will seek to specify more precisely some provisions of the strategy," Boni said, stressing that the basic reference point in the discussion on the document should be various development levels of individual member states.
The new 10-year plan is aimed to boost economic growth and create jobs.
The plan proposes to increase employment from 69 to 75 percent, cut carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent compared to the 1990 level, cut to 10 percent the percentage of people retiring too early, increase to 40 percent the percentage of higher learning intuition graduates, and reduce from 80 million to 60 million the number of the poor.
