Russian Police killed two militants in a clash on Monday in the capital city of the turbulent North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, Russian media reported.

"Around 14:00 Moscow time (1100 GMT), on Irchi Kozak Street, two suspected militants driving a VAZ-2109 car were surrounded. They were killed in a brief shootout," said a local police officer.

The republic's First Deputy Interior Minister Alexander Trofimov told reporters that one special force fighter was slightly wounded in the clash.

The militants who were both in their 20s and identified as Gibek Magomayev and Kerim Asadullayev, had committed a series of terrorist crimes, said Trofimov.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on the same day discussed the regional situation with Mukhu Aliyev, the leader of the republic.

"The two men discussed the social and economic situation of the republic, as well as the problems of ensuring security and fighting against crime," according to the Kremlin press service.

Two militant leaders in the region had been killed during special operations conducted by the Makhachkala police respectively on Saturday and Sunday.

Last Friday, Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev vowed tighter grip on militants in Dagestan, following a Wednesday suicide attack that killed five policemen and injured 24 others in the republic.

Russia's mainly Muslim North Caucasus republics, especially Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, have seen a rise in militant violence lately.
