Traffic was paralyzed in Moscow on Monday as this winter's largest snowfall swept through the Russian capital.

The blizzard, which began late on Sunday and continued on Monday morning, dropped some 20 cm of snow.

Thousands of snowplows were used to clear persistent snows and ice. Local officials called on motorists to take subways as heavy snowfall wreaked havoc on roadways.

All of Moscow's airports are open for business as usual.

The snow came on the heels of last week's biting frost, which saw temperatures in Moscow plunge to minus 25 degrees Celsius.
