Belgian Foreign Minister Karel de Gucht has been appointed member of the European Commission, following the resignation of Louis Michel, said the decision-making Council of Ministers of the European Union (EU) on Friday.

De Gucht will hold the portfolio of development and humanitarian aid until the end of the term of the current European Commission -- Oct. 31.

Michel had resigned from the commission to take up his seat in the European Parliament.

The decision to appoint de Gucht was taken by the council by written procedure, concluded on Thursday.
