Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said on Wednesday he was resigning and will not run for the presidency as previously expected, according to local media reports reaching here.

"I have decided to withdraw from active politics and not run for the presidency," Sanader told reporters in the Croatian capital Zagreb.

Sanader, head of the conservative Croatian Democratic Union, became prime minister in 2003 and won re-election in 2007. The 56-year-old still had two years to go before his current term in the office was to expire.
