Nine miners remained trapped underground on Tuesday following a rock slide at a coal mine in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk Region, local media reported.
The accident occurred on Monday in the Dzerzhinsk mine, fourteen miners were working at the scene at the time, five of them managed to reach the surface by themselves, the interfax-Ukraine news agency reported.
Local authorities are organizing tense rescue operations, an official said.
Many Ukrainian mines were constructed in the 19th century and barely modernized since Soviet times.
Three gas explosions in two weeks killed 106 miners in 2007 and last year more than a dozen died in similar blasts.
