Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tuskand President Lech Kaczynski sent letters of condolence to Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Monday following an earthquake which struck central Italy earlier in the day and killed nearly 100 people.

"It is with great sadness that I have learned of the tragic outcome of the earthquake in the city of L'Aquila," the prime minister was quoted as saying by Polish news agency PAP.

"Poland's government and people share the pain of the families of victims and residents of the Abruzzo region hit by the earthquake, who lost their homes and often all their possessions. On behalf of members of my Cabinet and Poland's citizens, I extend my sincerest condolences," Tusk added.

"At this sorrowful moment I share the pain and the prayer with the families of the victims," President Kaczynski said in his message.
