Ukraine's energy giant Naftogaz has made a full payment for Russia's gas supplied in February, the Russian state gas monopoly Gazprom said Thursday.

"Naftogaz has fully paid for the gas deliveries in February," Gazprom said in a statement published on Thursday evening.

Earlier in the day, Naftogaz said it had sent to Russia the final installment of the 360 million U.S. dollars it owed for gas consumed last month.

The payment came shortly after Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin threatened to cut off gas supplies to Ukraine and Europe if Kiev failed to pay the bill by Saturday.

Russia supplies a quarter of EU's gas needs, with 80 percent of it sent through Ukrainian pipelines.
