A Romanian non-commissioned officer with the Romanian Defense Ministry (MAp) was placed under preventive arrest for 29 days for treason, according to a Monday press release from the Department for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism.
A Bulgarian citizen was arrested for espionage, together with the Romanian non-commissioned officer.
According to the release, the prosecutors on Feb. 28 initiated criminal investigations and 24-hour arrest of Floricel Achim, under charges of treason, and of the foreign citizen Marinov Zikolov, charged with espionage.
"Investigations performed revealed that the two defendants developed a system, based on which Floricel Achim obtained military documents from a MAp military unit, including classified documents, whose unauthorized dissemination can pose a threat to national security and country defense, which he later gave to the defendant Marinov Zikolov," the document said.
The investigation department has also specified that after taking over the data through a complex system of connections, Marinov Zikolov would send them to representatives of a non-allied state.
"The investigation revealed that the motivation of the crimes were material benefits, that is various sums of money. Defendant Zikolov has systematically given defendant Achim money, in exchange for the information," the document added.
