Heavy snow early Friday morning is adding troubles to road, rail and air transportation in central and southern Britain where snow-caused chaos are continuing into its fifth day.

The West Country and south Wales were worst-hit overnight with up to 20cm of snow forecast in places.

The AA, the 1905-founded automobile association which has automobiles breakdown cover throughout UK, had received more than 3,000 callouts by 0930 GMT on Friday, double its normal workload, and it warned that shortages of road salt had created a "road safety crisis".

The Army was called in to pick up about 60 people stuck on a highway in the central part of the country with many drivers spending the night in emergency centers.
