Amsterdam lawyer Eberhard van der Laan has been named as the new Dutch minister for housing, communities and integration after Ella Vogelaar submitted a surprise resignation Thursday night.
Vogelaar, 58, resigned Thursday night after the leadership of her party, the Labor Party, declared a lack of confidence in her. The move followed a series of events which led to mounting criticism of Vogelaar's work performance both in the parliament and in the cabinet.
Van der Laan, 53, was a city councillor for the Labor party in Amsterdam in the 1990s. He is joint founder of the independent Amsterdam law firm Kennedy van der Laan.
According to the law firm's website, Van der Laan has "particular expertise in civil and criminal liability, real property and freedom of speech."
He is also an expert in the field of public-private cooperation, representing both the government and business clients, the website says.
